Foundations in Adolescent Development

Summary

The purpose of this course is to explore the developmental process of adolescence. The course will focus on how and why they do the things they do. Five key parts of adolescent development will be addressed: The Biological and Cognitive Development of Adolescence; Adolescent Brain Research—focuses on the similarities and differences of an adolescent brain with children and adults; Identity and Social Transitions; The Role of the Family and Friendships; and Adolescent Spiritual Development.

Student learning outcomes for this class will be the understanding of:

  • The biological and cognitive changes that relate to adolescence.
  • Historical perspectives of adolescent development and how the culture of the day affects our view of this age group.
  • The elements that support healthy brain development and factors that negatively impact cognitive outcomes including adolescent risk taking.
  • How identity is formed during this age by examining how boys and girls are affected differently.
  • The significance and influence of the various contexts of adolescents in family environments and peer groups.
  • The role of spirituality in adolescent teenagers.
